GILBERT GILBERSTADT, Head Coach

Where were you born?:  I was born in Ormoc city, Philippines and came to the United States when I was 6 years old when I settle in San Francisco.

Please highlight your volleyball playing experience, if any:  My passion for volleyball began in the early nineties when I started playing volleyball in recreationally. My alma mater, Riordan High School, did not have volleyball program so I took volleyball classes at the junior college level at City College of SF. After learning and playing the sport for some time I began to play local tournaments.

Please highlight your volleyball coaching experience: Over the last 12 years, I have coached various age groups ranging from 12 to 18. Quake City Volleyball Club was the beginning of my coaching carrier. Beyond coaching club, I expanded my expertise to the following schools: Mercy Burlingame varsity (2004), Capucchino High School Frosh/Soph. Also I ran clinics in All Souls (South San Francisco) and Abbott Middle School. I’m currently coaching for 8A team at Abbott Middles School.

Please list any award, or championships, you received as either a player or a coach:  When I was a freshman at Riordan High School I took my WCAL title in Wrestling. But as my passion grew for volleyball, along with my team we won many double outdoors tournaments. I also participated indoors tournaments from varies level from beginners to advance leagues winning several divisions.

What is your education background?:  I began my life in San Francisco attending St. Anthony followed by Arch Bishop Riordan. Upon graduating high school, I continued my education at City College of San Francisco and transferred to San Francisco State University. I took a leave from SFSU and latter continued my education at University of Phoenix in receiving my undergraduate degree in Information Technology (2003) and Master Degree at Golden Gate University in Information Technology in emphasis in Management (2009). I have many certifications around technical specification (MCSE, CCNA, ITIL, and etc.). My volleyball education has continued to expand with the following classes and certifications: Impact Certification, CAP I, Gold Medal Squared 1 and 2, ASEP, Positive Coaching Alliance and in the process of completion CAP II.

Is there any other personal experiences, or training, that you feel makes you a better coach?: One of my strengths is problem solving. And I continuously work to identifying the root cause of problems and developing plans for positive results. This is translated in everyday life experiences along with the application to my coaching style. This enhances and improves the outcomes by helping player’s physical and mental ability to grow.

What personal philosophy sitcks out the most when it comes to coaching junior club volleyball?:  I believe in if you work hard, play hard, you will rewards will follow. I typically say, “We are not perfect but if we try and do our best to become perfect it will eventually be perfect.” If we love what we do and put your heart and effort every day the sum of all your hard work will in turn be an amazing result. I believe of learning and having fun.

What is your favorite experience with the sport of vollebyall?:  One of my personal memorable moments was my first win at an outdoor tournament and indoor tournament at Vegas. My wife and I also enjoy watching college matches at Stanford. Our favorite player of all time at Stanford is Logan Tom (OH).

What are you currently doing if you are not coaching volleyball?:  I work for AAA Insurance Company as a Desktop Support Technician. When I’m not coaching I spend most of my time with my wife, Magda, and we enjoy traveling, or hanging out with our three Huskies (Krystal, Domino, and Rusty). We also enjoy the outdoors, sporting events, Broadway shows, and etc… We are proud 49er and Giant fans & season ticket holders.

What is something unique about yourself that you would like to share?  I love to talk and could long winded but it’s all driven from passion to live.
